The Women’s Independent Soccer League (WISL) today announced a delay in its application to the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) for sanctioning as a Division II women’s professional league. The league still will apply for sanctioning to start play in 2024, but it believes diligence is critical to confirming a strong and stable set of inaugural clubs.
“It is our decision to communicate to USSF the need for more runway for some ownership groups to solidify critical elements of their enterprises,” says Lynn Berling-Manuel, managing director of the new pro league. “We’re confident that the 2024 WISL season will provide the best professional women’s soccer league experience in the nation for independent clubs.”
